Help Wanted!

I read each week at an inner-city school with refugee kids.

The school very much needs some other people to read to and with the preps on a regular basis, at least weekly but preferably more often. So if you live in Melbourne, have some time in the mornings, and like books and kids, send me an email and I can forward you more details.

If you have young children of your own, you are welcome to bring them and have them play in the classroom while you read.

You can read about my experience reading with the kids here (how I got into it) and here (looking for books for them) and here (some of the things I've done with them). I've absolutely loved the experience, and can highly recommend it!

  1. Dear Alison,

I found you by way of Hope at A Song Not Scored for Breathing. I'm very grateful she mentioned your blog. I find it delightful.

I loved your story about walking around the Lakes District with your daughter. It was beautifully written. A joy to read.

I also took my daughter to England. We spent a semester there when I was about 30 and she was about 12. I was an English major, so it was the fulfillment of a dream for me. I don't remember my daughter being as enchanted as yours was.

But we did have some good times. She could be persuaded to be happy as long as I took her to a Boots department store or a movie. We both loved chocolate digestive biscuits. I smuggled several packages of them back home. And there was a warm pudding we used to make from a powder and boiling water.

The place where we were happiest in our time there was while we were traveling on spring break. We found a little Italian fishing village where there were no movies or department stores, but there was gellato and a train strike so we could not leave and 3-hour afternoon siestas, which we always spent on the beach, and we were both supremely happy.

Your post brought that all back. Thanks for the ramble. I'll be following.

  2. Hi Kathy, Well, six year olds are easier to please than 12 year olds! We too have fallen in love with chocolate digestives and all manner of English food. Very unexpected. It's funny what brings us such happiness! alison
